Blocks
Blocks are the basic units of structure in Minecraft, and are essential to the gameplay. Together, they build up the in-game environment, and can be mined and utilized in various fashions. There are one hundred and fifty three different blocks.
The face of a block is 16×16 pixels, and each block is proportionately one cubic meter.[1] Most blocks are static, although water, lava, portal, and fire blocks have a shifting pattern for each face.
World-generated blocksEntries marked with a D require additional data values to fully define the block in a Minecraft world. Entries marked with an I have a different ID as an inventory item. Entries marked with a B require additional inventory data to fully define the inventory item. Entries marked with a T have tile entities associated with them to store additional data. Items with IDs in red cannot be legitimately obtained by the player in the game; they can only be obtained by using inventory editors or the /give command. Items available only in Creative mode are in blue. Items only obtainable through the Silk Touch enchantment in survival mode are in green.

Items
Items are objects which do not exist outside of the player's inventory and hands i.e., they cannot be placed in the game world. Some items simply place blocks or entities into the game world when used. They are thus an item when in the inventory and a block when placed. Some examples of objects which inhibit these properties are Item Frames, which turn into an entity when placed, andbeds, which turn into a block when placed. As of 1.4.6, items and blocks will now display their names above the HUD when equipped. The text soon disappears, however.
Items use item IDs while blocks use block IDs.

Types
- Materials: are used for crafting, farming or brewing and can be obtained by mining, crafting, smelting, trading, killing mobs or found in reward chests.
- Potions are craftable drinkable (or throwable) items that confer specific effects. Producing them requires resources from the Nether.
- Tools are used for a variety of purposes:
- The "pole tools" (axe, pickaxe, shovel, hoe) are mostly used to break blocks faster than mining by hand, and are required in order to retrieve resources from some blocks. The exception is the hoe, which converts dirt into farmland for growing crops.
